Adult Ed Takes Off

October was busy for the Education Program with English and Spanish instruction going on five days a week. The Beginning Spanish Conversation class, taught by Lupe Yepes, wrapped up after 16 classes with 6 students trying out their new vocabulary and pronunciation skills in final games and activities.
English instruction included individual tutoring, class for workers at the Cherry Point Plant, and the experimental Drop-In English Class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Students at the Drop-In Class come at their convenience to engage in activities to improve their general English or English related to their jobs.

The highlight of the month for the Drop-In Class was pumpkin carving night, which took place the night before Halloween. A crowd of 17 people—students and their children, friends and staff—carved about 25 pumpkins. English learners learned the true meaning of “carve, scrape, seeds, stem,” and other related terms as they and the others cleaned out their pumpkins and created incredible jack-o-lanterns.
