Celebrating La Posada

Piñata fun!

Piñata fun!

We celebrated our 4th Annual Holiday Posada on December 7th at the EdGE Center in Cherryfield. A posada is a Mexican cultural tradition that takes place in December in the days leading up to Christmas. In context it means “hospitality” or a space to stay—welcoming friends in for a meal and festivities. With festive decorations and great food, the building turns into a place for sharing, fun, and games throughout the evening.

Adults and kids alike got involved playing traditional children’s games like musical chairs (Las Sillas) but also participated in a few new games where teams had to run a relay with eggs on a spoon, and fierce competitions on who could put on the most pieces of oversized clothing (Abrígate). Needless to say, everyone was laughing!

“Of the many great things about this event, what I like the best is that there are many children and youth who are now looking forward to it year after year,” said Bethany Woods, our Community Relations Coordinator, “and keep asking when it is going to happen again. Diving for candy under the piñata seems to be the most popular!”

The practice of the posada persists in Mexico and Latin America because it is a symbol of unity, signifies the meaning of friendship, and at the end of the year is a way to do a good deed for someone else. As an organization, we are so excited to continue sharing this unique and fun tradition with the community!

We’d like to extend special thanks to Board members that assisted with our event, the Comunidad de Cristo Church for a gift certificate donation, the EdGE Center for use of their building, and all the staff, volunteer, and community support.
